Pretty much every other major city in the UK wishes they had something like the tube though. Yes, that is rather frightning, but it's an indication about how bad transport is in some of the busier parts of the UK.

You can now resume your utterings about Cockneys and cider, thankyouverymuch.

Yeah, this is true.

The tube is extremely efficient, when you don't get on a defective train, get stuck at Bank tube station for forever!

But despite all the whinges, coming from surrey where it takes you forever to get from one part to another, London transport isn't all bad!!

And coming from the Isle Of Wight where there is only two buses a week, the tube is the best idea since ideas first started being had by people!

Buying drinks in Academy venues is always a bad idea. They don't put cashpoints inside for nothing and I've a few theories about the drinks too, which I best not post in public...

I live in Birmingham and we seem to manage just fine with out being crammed into metal underground coffins like cattle with a bunch of miserable, ignorant, po faced bastards. Twisted Evil I saw a guy on the tube laughing once, I think they took him off and shot him. Twisted Evil

I saw a brilliant sticker in a Tube train recently. It was precisely the same format as all the Official stickers that say "Failure to show a valid ticket or Oyster Card..", (or my favorite - "Open Window for Ventilation") etc - but it said "No eye contact". The sticker is unecessasary, it's like everyone obeys it anyway.

I use a tube most mornings - Tottenham Hale to Victoria on the victoria line, then to Fulham on the district. I am one of the people who reads a paper however packed the tube is. It's my right, dammit. I spend about 90 minutes in each direction on my Tube journey, plus another 30 mins on an overland train - every single day (except the ones where I work at home...). I am going to read something, or I will fall asleep or go insane.

I'm generally concious of (and concientious about) who's face I might be sticking the paper in though...

Oh, and about being Po faced - there is a good reason for that. The closer everyone is packed, the more closed off from everyone each person becomes. We are forced together, so we react in the opposite way. Revealing no emotions, avoiding eye contact, and almost pretending we can't see the other people with us, is our way of dealing with the density of people. It's the same in any tightly packed city - the denser it is, the more everyone ignores each other.

Perhaps we should sway like cattle! it stops them going insane apparently! Laughing Are people really in that much of a rush that they feel they need to barge on to what is already an overcrowded tube? I'm not saying it's a bad system but it's already overtaxed and with the congestion charge I think it's only going to get worse. God help you when the olympics roll round!

It is a good system in some ways, the trains are pretty regular and go to most places. What I don't get (and I know this is a very idealistic view, and the world doesn't actually work like this...) is when sooo many people use it, they put the prices up even more, it's a fucking rip off! As a very infrequent user I've ended up with an Oyster card which I wanted to avoid unless I was living there, it's like London now owns part of my soul! Evil or Very Mad The trains in Birmingham can be pretty packed when I'm on my way to uni, but people are still fairly friendly and helpful! I'm just glad I don't have to use the tube very often Laughing

They put the prices up to discourage people from using it unless they have to - which has the pleasant side-effect of making a ton of extra money for the operator. Unfortunately, this is also the case with the Congestion charge, so when you can't afford to drive or catch a train, the city becomes the domain of rich people only Sad

I read in Time-Out that London produces 70% of the entire country's wealth, including Wales and Scotland, so if we declared London a city state and became independant from the rest of the country, we'd be the richest country on the planet. Richest, and Shittiest, in my opinion Razz
