I'm just curious to see what people on this forum listen to when they're not listening to Area 54 or bands that play a similar style. Personally, I listen to Doom (e.g. Shape Of Despair) and Classical (mainly Russian composers e.g. Kanchelli) and the odd bit of Jazz. Dexter Gordon I like.

Dude, you could argue forever about which genre some bands fit into - A54 being a case in point! Some cool bands there!

I like a random mix of stuff all together. I make up compilations on itunes that switch from Pantera to Abba to Marilyn Manson to The Spice Girls to Tchaikovsky to Cradle of Filth to The Beach Boys and so on and so forth.

Also a massive fan of Leonard Cohen. My life would have no meaning without that man!

Ooh and a bit of Scott Joplin as well. To play on the piano or to listen to Very Happy

God yes.... Leonard Cohen! Absolute genuis of a man! Totally with you on that one. Ever heard of Ed Laurie? If you like Leonard Cohen you might like him - not that he's a soundalike, mind. http://www.myspace.com/edlaurie

Ah thanks for that. I didn't know of him. Am just listening now and its quite cool. Not a patch on Cohen though, no-one can match his genius lyricism!

Agreed - who could match Leonard Cohen? In that respect I think its quite unfortunate for Ed Laurie that he keeps getting compared to Leonard Cohen - if you hear that comparison made before you hear him it can kill the music with false expectations. But he has his own style. And he has a song about L'Etranger by Camus!

Huge range of stuff i love in there.

metal is at the heart and soul of it - but ive listened to so many different types of music over the years - i love lots of celtic/ traditional irish stuff as well asproper classical stuff.

Simon and garfunkle have been big favourites for a long time - probably since i was about 13 and we had to analyse some of the songs in Eng Lit lessons.

My mum is a trained soprano so used to do a lot of weddings, things like ave maria and panus angelicus stuff i love because it just reminds me of being a kid and hearing her sing stuff.

Playing the genre game is often inaccurate at best.

Anyway, rather than reel off a list, I'll just point you toward my Last.FM profile, so you can see what I'm actually listening to.

Anything and everything! Rock, metal, pop, jazz, classical, swing, depending on my mood! Although, playing in a band I like to take a break from music now and again, being a musician it's difficult to listen to music sometimes without analysing the structure, rhythms, melodies, etc.
